The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

With courage, grace, and powerful insight, bestselling author Kristin Hannah captures the epic panorama of World War II and illuminates an intimate part of history seldom seen; the women’s war. The Nightingale tells the stories of two sisters, separated by years and experience, by ideals, passion, and circumstance, each embarking on her own dangerous path toward survival, love, and freedom in German-occupied, war-torn France-a heartbreakingly beautiful novel that celebrates the resilience of the human spirit and the durability of women. It is a novel for everyone, a novel for a lifetime. (Pages: 564/Published: 2015)

This captivating story is about two young French sisters, Vianne and Isabelle Rossignol during World War II and how they were determined to survive at all costs.
Vianne and Isabelle could not be any different from one another. Vianne is the oldest of the two, married with a family of her own. While Isabelle is the youngest, much wilder, and more carefree from her older sister, determined to make something of life other than becoming a wife. Both are thrown off course when Nazis invade France and change both their lives forever. Vianne’s husband is called to fight for the war, leaving his wife and child behind to survive alone. Isabelle, feeling she must do her part to help those who can not help themselves, joins the French Resistance, leading her down not only a noble but dangerous path. Both sisters must brave the unbelievable dangers they both face, not just alone but together in this heartbreaking tale of love, loss, war, and survival.

A breath-taking tale of war, love, loss, and finding one’s strength when all hope seemed lost. This book is elegantly written in a way nothing quite compares. One of the most beautiful tales I have had the pleasure of reading in some time now and is one that I will never forget. There is not one single aspect of this book that I disliked. The characters were exquisite, the detail and growth given throughout this book were outpourings. The plot was slow-burning, never too fast nor too slow, keeping just the right speed to always keep my attention. The experiences detailed in this book are truly haunting ones, they detail not only heroism but triumph when it seemed like there was nothing left but defeat.
This was one of the most heart touching, yet heartbreaking books I have ever read. I loved it more than I had imagined myself too. Hannah did an astonishing job writing nothing short of perfection, she is a storyteller of our time. I would love nothing more than to scream all the details, but I cannot give too much away without ruining so much of the story. This is a story that must be read to understand the true beauty of it all.
This book has crept up my list of favorites, my now second favorite novel ever written; daring me to say that I may have found myself, my new favorite author. I can not express enough how much this novel needs to not only be read but shared. This is a timeless classic that touches so many topics it can not be ignored for what it is, a brilliant masterpiece of a time we should never soon forget. Make sure you have a tissue ready; you will need it. This is one story that will tug on every heartstring. A must-read. I wish I could read it again as if I never have.
