A timeless thriller set in a small beach town called Amity in 1974, Amity is known for its summer crowds and thrives off the vacationers to exist during their off-season. One summer Amity is struck by unbelievable terror, a shark has taken a liking to the local beach, going on a spree of attacks. The town chief of police, officer Brody soon learns there is no easy fix to this series of unfortunate attacks. Unsure of what to do Brody sets out to kill the killer shark to bring peace to his town once again, though the task proves to be more than one man can manage. With the help of a shark expert and a local fisher, the men find themselves face to face with the man-eater . . . who will survive and who will be the next on this shark’s dinner plate?
As a long-standing fan of the movie Jaws, including all the sequels. Cannot believe it took me this long to read the book. The movie portrayal does an excellent job following the essential parts of this thriller, the shark, and the shark attacks. However, the novel digs a bit deeper into the lives, present, and past of Mr. & Ms. Brody. Including a sub-romance involving Ms. Body. That does not mean the shark attack scenes were lacking, with violent encounters between man and shark from the first chapter to the last.
Benchley does a skillful job presenting strong, developed characters in this novel the Brody Family, Matt Hooper (the shark expert), Sam Quint (the hunter), and the Major Mr. Vaughn. Each portrayed in a brand-new light bringing something bolder to this published edition. Suspenseful, classical writing keeps you turning each page until you have read it all. Could not help but read this action-packed read within two days. Could not put it down, read it every chance I had.
This was a fearsome novel packed with horror, suspense, romance, leading hundreds to fear the water for years to come. Jaws will never get old, forever reining terror upon its readers. A must-read for all movie fans. The novel gives a different twist to the well-known tale. Horror, Thriller, Action lovers, check it out as it has something for you as well. A page-turning ocean thriller.
